National Rifle Association Center - 12 mi: NRA's Whittington Center is the largest competition shooting facility in the world. Whittington opens its 33,000 acres for target shooting, hunting, competitions, training and tours. NOTE: Tours are not conducted while people are shooting.
Sugarite Canyon State Park - 10 mi: 9,600 acres, heavily wooded, mountainous area that contains 3 lakes, two in New Mexico and one just across the border in Colorado. Recreation is year-round with mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, cross-country skiing, trout fishing and hunting.
Capulin Volcano National Monument - 30 mi: Created by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Eight walking trails around its rim. The oldest flows started almost 10 million years ago, and the most recent less than 10,000 years ago.
Raton Municipal Golf Course: This nine-hole golf course is well landscaped and has terrific views. Watch out for the mule deer and wild turkey.
Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally: The rally now features three days of beautiful hot air balloons filling the northeastern New Mexico sky as the sun rises. On independence Day evening, balloons light up the night sky to provide a stunning backdrop to live entertainment and spectacular fireworks display conducted by the City of Raton Fire and Police Departments.
Philmont Boy Scout Ranch - 40 mi: More than 18,000 scouts come from across the nation and around the world each year to enjoy treks and a variety of programs at the historic Philmont Scout Ranch.
Maxwell Wildlife Refuge - 22 mi: If wildlife viewing and fishing are to your taste, the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, is the place to be. It is a natural birdhouse.
